As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sakia Gunn's death, we honor her memory as a bold and resilient young, Black lesbian who stood up for herself, her friends, and her community. Her tragic murder sparked a movement for justice and LGBTQ visibility in Newark and beyond. Sakia's story is a reminder of the continued violence that many LGBTQ people of color face.
