Generally, I like front squats to be done with a bounce and back squats to be more controlled through the bottom. Back squats are a good opportunity to really train leg strength from the smallest knee angle, which helps not just squats, but your ability to pull from the floor with correct posture. Back squats also have much less of a trunk stability demand, so bouncing is not doing much to help that side of it anyway. Front squats are an opportunity to train optimal position, timing and aggressi

Forgive my left side not moving perfectly—it was reassembled with 6 anchors and doesn’t quite function correctly anymore. You get the idea. 1-3 sets of 3-5 reps each in your warm-up is an easy and effective way to start seeing big improvements in your snatch turnover. Move aggressively and viciously. If you need to practice the first two more slowly initially until you can perform them well, that’s fine—but ultimately you need to be moving at maximal speed, especially in the tall snatch. Stick w

Ideas, cues and instructions in weightlifting can be easily misunderstood, especially with their most common source of distribution these days being social media with its many inherent problems and limitations. Critical details are changed or absent, transforming a necessary action into something problematic. A lifter believes that they’re doing what they’re supposed to and doesn’t realize it’s actually harming the execution of the lift. This is one of those things I see very often, so hopefully

When I was just starting out lifting, I thought about my arms as rubber bands—as I pushed and extended by body, the weight on the bar stretched them longer and longer until I reached full extension, at which point all that band tension snapped me down under the bar. Many years ago I heard Tim Swords say, “Tow the bar”, and I like that as a simple way to think about this concept. Figure out the cue or description of this that makes the most sense to you. #catalystathletics #garagemind #snatchtech

This is one of those odd things about the body that usually doesn’t immediately make sense, but has serious practical implications for the Olympic lifts. Let your body execute based on a simple goal for the action rather than trying to manage every detail with play-by-play direction—your conscious mind is incapable of that kind of operation. It’s way too fast and way too complex. Use your conscious mind to control positions and balance in bordering phases, i.e. the starting position and initiati

I think bracing might be one of the hardest things to teach, and it gets even harder because there’s so much disagreement on what works best. Always keep the purpose in the forefront of your mind: To make the trunk rigid to transmit force as completely as possible and prevent injury.* If you’re locking your trunk in actively and forcefully and it’s not compressing or bending as you lift, you’re doing fine. Don’t overthink it. *It should be noted for thoroughness that aside from the mechanical pu

This is one of many reasons that paying attention to the technique of supplemental exercise exercises like squats and pulls is so important. The way you perform those exercises doesn’t just reinforce the skill element that you need for the Olympic lifts, but it develops the underlying physical abilities that support the execution of those skills with heavy loads.A really great way to drive yourself completely insane with frustration is to continue trying to work on technical changes without ad

Keep the knees out this much in the pull until the bar has passed them, the allow the legs to move naturally as you continue driving through the top of the pull. There’s typically no need to push the knees out as you pull even farther than they start, and doing so will tend to weaken the motion. An exception is lifters with long legs who may find pushing out slightly more until the bar is past the knees helpful. #snatch #snatchtechnique #clean #cleantechnique #weightlifting #olympicweightlifting

You cannot do perfect reps every time… or likely ever. But you absolutely can put perfect effort into every single one. Take every rep as seriously as a max attempt, or your max attempts are going to suffer from whatever you’ve practiced with your unserious reps. Pay attention to the details in the gym and outside of it. Make notes and refer to back to them to stay on track. You shouldn’t be starting over again every session, and your coach shouldn’t have to tell you a hundred times to do the ba

If you don’t have a coach or friend to give you commands, you can still do this. Just stop yourself at different arbitrary points each rep and check your balance and stability—you can’t surprise yourself with when you need to stop, but it will still force you to be conscious of your position and balance, and consequently improve it. #snatchtechnique #cleantechnique #catalystathletics #garagemind | Catalyst Athletics

More videos to help with stability in the snatch: https://catalystathletics.com/iglc/11/ There’s no need to bounce out of a snatch to recover like in the clean, so don’t be in a hurry to stand up before you’re stable. Unless you unquestionably receive the bar perfectly, settle in and stabilize at least briefly before standing. Magnifying instability by unnecessarily rushing the recovery is a stupid way to miss a lift. If you feel the bar abruptly move forward or backward significantly, you may n

Add this to your warm-up to improve your overhead mobility and stability. 10-15 reps should be plenty—just remember to try to gradually reach farther back. Use a controlled tempo in both directions to ensure control and a continuous active effort against the tension. Keep your forearms approximately parallel to each other with constant tension out against the band. #shouldermobility #overheadmobility #snatchmobility #jerkmobility #catalystathletics #garagemind | Catalyst Athletics

This is an intentionally brief, simplified video. There’s a lot going on in the starting position—and every aspect of it affects the others. But this is the standard you should start with—you can make minor adjustments from here if needed. Proportions and overall height will influence the exact shoulder-bar relationship that works best for each athlete. Taller athletes are likely going to move the shoulders slightly farther forward—but the key word there is SLIGHTLY. I’ve never coached or seen a

It’s common to hear coaches advising lifters whose cleans crash to hold a full or even hook grip into the rack position as a solution. But this only MIGHT help IF the underlying problem is poor timing of the grip release. And even then, it’s not actually solving the problem, but finding away around it. Worse, it often creates other problems like slow elbows, a short turnover and an insecure rack position, along with the injury and pain potential of that position. Many lifters, because of proport

Even if you’re doing it correctly, the hook grip may not be comfortable when you’re new to it. Give it some time for your hands to get conditioned to a totally new position and effort. If you feel like it’s abrading your thumbs, you can wrap them in elastic athletic tape. With consistent use over time, your hand will actually remodel itself to a degree to function better with the grip, making it increasingly comfortable, natural and secure. #hookgrip #grip #snatchgrip #cleangrip #weightlifting #
