Tucson Bird Alliance was so happy to team up with amazing organizations for this year’s Santa Cruz Watershed Days of Connection River Cleanup! Together, we pulled around 3,000 pounds of trash from the Santa Cruz River, proof that community creates change! Huge thanks to everyone who showed up and shared their time, energy, and heart to care for our beloved Santa Cruz. A river cherished by birds, critters, and humans alike. @tucsoncleanbeautiful @watershed_mg @sonoraninstitute @unitedwayaz @santa

Ever caught sight of Gadwall ducks gracefully dabbling just beneath the water's surface? Their unassuming yet stunning patterns are a marvel upon closer inspection! Gadwalls have a clever dining strategy. They’re known to cozy up near diving ducks and deftly snatch their meals as these divers resurface. Talk about tactical dining! 🍽️💦 📷: Mick Thompson Video Description: A video of a male and female Gadwall pair swimming on the surface of a green body of water and occasionally dipping the fron

Not all ducks quack! Some, like this Northern Pintail male, have a short whistle-like chirp, as you can hear in this video. With their long necks and stunning plumage, Northern Pintails are the picture of elegance. But they’re not just about looks—they’re also incredible travelers. During migration, they can reach speeds of up to 48 miles per hour, flying through the night. The longest nonstop flight ever recorded for a Northern Pintail covered an impressive 1,800 miles. 📷: Mick Thompson | Bird

One of the best and hardest parts of learning to bird by ear is the fact that birds don’t just have one sound. They have many, from songs to calls. Many might be able to recognize the iconic Great Horned Owl song, or at least be able to tell that it’s from an owl species thanks to the typical “Hoo”. But, for many, hearing this female call out in the forest might leave them stumped. Take a listen. What bird sounds have stumped you? Video by Mick Thompson | Bird Alliance of Oregon

We have some great news to share! While there are swifts roosting at locations throughout the city, one of the biggest roosts is at Abernethy Elementary School in southeast Portland. On Sunday night, our volunteers counted more than 7,000 swifts! We’ve been in touch with the principal who has given us permission to share this location. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to visit the school to view the swifts (which typically funnel into their roost at dusk): ▪ Bike, walk, or rid

On February 10, Audubon Society of Portland's Wildlife Care Center rescued a Bald Eagle from fishing line in the Willamette River in downtown Portland. On Sunday, she was released back into the wild in front of an audience of hundreds of people. We filmed her journey from rescue to release. Enjoy! Dabbling Ducks don’t dive? Says who! This Mallard Duck is here to prove he’s got the moves. While Mallards are mostly seen dabbling (turning upside down so their heads are under water and their butts are in the air), they will sometimes dive for short periods. They might do it to escape from a predator or forage for food that’s deeper down in the water. This duck dove six or seven times, presumably searching for food at the bottom of the pond. | Bird Alliance of Oregon

They may be considered the stockier variety of herons, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fabulous! Come breeding season, Black-crowned Night Herons grow two long and elegant white feathers on the back of their head called occipital plumes (or nuchal plumes). Paired with their ruby-red eyes and that crisp black-and-gray tuxedo look, they’re basically the James Bond of the wetlands. 📷: Video by Mick Thompson | Bird Alliance of Oregon

When you're a good enough flyer to catch insects in mid-air, you can also use your skills to make feeding drops without ever even touching down. This remarkable slow motion video shows just how precise Tree Swallows can be in flight. While Tree Swallows nest in tree cavities, they will also use nest boxes if available. This practice makes them easier to view during breeding season at nature preserves, like Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge. Tree Swallows love wetlands and fields with water nearby.

Who-who-who's excited to see two familiar faces in our trailside enclosures? Our Great-horned Owl, Julio, and American Kestrel, Xena, are officially settling into their new enclosures thanks to the help of our volunteers and leadership by our Ambassador Animal Care and Outreach Coordinator Katie Newton. We’re looking forward to a lot more hoots, head bobbing, and more opportunities to learn from our beautiful animal ambassadors! [Video Description: Portland Audubon’s Great-horned Owl Ambassador

All smiles after releasing 6 Violet-green Swallows and a Barn Swallow back into the wild this week! These young swallows found themselves at the Wildlife Care Center for a variety of reasons, from getting trapped in a dryer vent to making a home in someone's muffler. After weeks of tweezer-feeding them every 30 minutes, these social swallows were ready to venture back out into the world, immediately joining the flock of birds already foraging in the warm skies. If you’ve visited our Ambassador Animals recently, you may have had a hard time finding Xena in her enclosure. This is because it’s breeding season for American Kestrels! Kestrels nest in cavities from April or early May until they’ve incubated and raised their chicks. Clutches typically contain 4-6 eggs, and some kestrel pairs will raise two clutches in a single breeding season. During breeding season, Xena is often hiding in one of her nest boxes and is more active than usual. If you’re lucky,

Yesterday, we reunited this fledgling Great Horned Owlet with their parents in NE Portland. Every year when young owls fledge, they leave the nest before they can fly, and can end up on the ground as they explore their surroundings. Their parents continue to feed them, and they can even climb back up trees! However, well intentioned people see the young owl on the ground and think they need help. Too often they take the young owls to wildlife rehabilitation centers, thinking they are saving the

To help keep those healthy babies with their families, Ashley Lema from our Wildlife Care Center gives you all the info you need to tell adult crows from fledglings. The Blue Square Alliance Against Hate (BSA), Robert Kraft's foundation fighting antisemitism, had returned to the Super Bowl with a $15 million ad focused on standing up to Jewish hate. The 30-second spot shows a teenage boy being bullied at school who finds an antisemitic sticky note on his backpack. The ad reveals that 2 in 3 Jewish teens have experienced antisemitism and encourages viewers to "share the square." Directed by Jake Scott, "Sticky Note" is part of BSA's #BlueSquare campaign promo
