In “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), the dramatic fireball scene where the Wicked Witch of the West appears to hurl a fiery missile at the Scarecrow was achieved through a double exposure technique, layering two separately filmed shots. First, the live-action sequence was shot with Margaret Hamilton as the Witch on a cottage roof and Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow below. Then, in a darkened studio, a gas torch was rolled along a track to capture its glowing path against a black background. These two films
