Take a minute to relax and watch this footage of a spotted salamanders, captured in western N.C. by an NC Wildlife Resources Commission intern in 2019. Spotted salamanders are found throughout much of the eastern U.S., ranging from as far north as Canada down to the Gulf of Mexico. They are most commonly found in hardwood and mixed forests but are also found in different habitats such as floodplains and other bodies of fresh water. Why did the salamander cross the road? To get to the breeding pond of course! Every spring, Spotted Salamanders make a perilous journey to a nearby pond to breed. This can somestimes mean crossing roads, which is dangerous for these slow-moving amphibians. They are hard to see on the road, especially in the dark and rain.
