The Benty Grange Helmet, c.7th century. This is the first Anglo-Saxon helmet to be found and was discovered by James Bateman whilst excavating a barrow near Monyash, Derbyshire, in May 1848. Only the iron framework topped by a wild boar survives, although traces of horn pattern have been found on some of the ironwork.
