KCCI ARCHIVE: 30 years ago today, United Airlines Flight 232 crash landed at Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City. The flight from Denver was headed to Chicago. As the plane was over Iowa, the tail engine exploded. Debris from the blast cut through the hydraulic lines, causing the pilots to lose flight controls. Flight 232 made it to Sioux Gateway Airport, but crashed during the landing. There were 296 people on board, 112 people were killed, but 184 survived. | KCCI

Today marks the 32-year remembrance of United Flight 232 that crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa after the DC-10 suffered a catastrophic failure of the tail engine and loss of most flight controls. The crew is credited for saving 185 of the 296 lives aboard in what most believed would have been a complete loss of life without their heroic efforts. While the pilots’ actions gave everyone a chance to live, Flight Attendants did all that they could to prepare the cabin for impact and get survivors sa
