A snowstorm is underway Tuesday night at the North Carolina Outer Banks with even Wilmington to see 5 inches of snow, officials said.

While snowfall amounts were trending down in North Carolina, they have spiked up: 'heavy snow possible' at the Outer Banks with a half foot of snow forecast Tuesday night.

The latest models suggest a dynamic winter storm could bring light to moderate snow to southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina overnight Tuesday.

Prior to the recent flurries, the National Weather Service last recorded snowfall in Wilmington on Jan. 29, 2022 — reporting a total half inch, according to the Wilmington N.C. Snowfall Database. Also, on Jan. 10, a system brought sleet to the area before turning into rain.

Wilmington and its surrounding area are under a Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service beginning Tuesday night at 9 and lasting until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Snow is expected, according to the NWS, with total accumulations up to five inches near the coast with higher amounts possible in some areas.

In its morning winter storm warning, the National Weather Service in Wilmington said the Wilmington area could pile on 3 to 4 inches of snowfall. However, the National Weather Service in Raleigh predicts 4 to 6 inches of snow in the Wilmington area as of 12:30 p.m.
