The St. Louis Cardinals are weighing trades of some big pieces, the San Diego Padres are shopping Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez after acquiring Mason Miller and the Houston Astros have emerged in the Sandy Alcantara sweepstakes.

The Padres, after completing a blockbuster trade earlier in the day, reportedly added to their depth at a key position in a trade with the Kansas City Royals.

A recent uptick in production was not enough to keep the Padres from trying to upgrade at the catcher position. The team on Thursday acquired Freddy Fermin from the Royals in exchange for starting pitchers Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek.
