Amid a fresh set of attacks on Fed Chair Jerome Powell came reports that President Donald Trump might fire the central banker. Increasingly, Trump is frustrated with Powell for not lowering interest rates already. Consumers hoping for lower rates as well may be better off if the Fed sticks to its current plan, experts say.

President Donald Trump said he would consider National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett to replace Jerome Powell as chair of the Federal Reserve. Hassett said he believes the Fed should remain independent but wouldn’t comment on if he would take the job if it was offered to him.
After asking a group of House Republicans on Tuesday if he should fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, President Trump on Wednesday said it's unlikely Powell will be fired and he'll wait until the Fed chair's term is up next year.
