Nick Kyrgios broke down in tears at Indian Wells, Calif. on Thursday night as he was forced to retire injured from his first-round match at the BNP Paribas Open against Botic Van de Zandschulp.

Van de Zandschulp, who ranks 85th in the world, lost in qualifiers Tuesday at the BNP Paribas Open, against Matteo Gigante, but found his way into the main draw as a lucky loser. Now, he'll face the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

But then, Kyrgios picked up a knee injury just before the start of the 2023 season and surgically addressed it. Half a year later, he was hit with another brutal setback after seriously injuring his wrist and requiring another surgical procedure.
