Founded in 1982 and based in Lake Jackson, Buc-ee's now operates 35 stores in Texas and 15 in other states, according to the release. In 2019, the chain began expanding outside Texas; last year, it broke ground on its first stores in Virginia, Mississippi and Ohio.

According to the release, the San Marcos store will also employ at least 200 people. In 2024, Buc-ee’s broke ground on its first locations in Virginia, Mississippi, and Ohio, the release added. The travel center also began construction on its third locations in Georgia and Tennessee.
