An evacuation order is in effect Tuesday for Otay Mountain-area neighborhoods as crews worked to contain the smoldering remnants of a wildfire that scorched about 10 square miles of remote terrain in the far southern reaches of the San Diego area over the last five days.

A wildfire in the hills near the U.S.-Mexico border exploded early Friday morning over thousands of acres, triggering school closures and evacuation orders throughout the Otay Wilderness Area. Wind from the ocean pushed the Border 2 fire east as the day wore on and the evacuation area has expanded to include Dulzura and other rural spots east of Otay Mountain.

A fast-moving wildfire erupted several miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border in the San Diego area, blackening thousands of open acres as ground and airborne crews worked Friday to quell the flames amid arid and blustery Santa Ana conditions.
