Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker rested his case Wednesday in the second-degree murder trial against former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr. Now, Schurr’s attorneys are calling what could be a lengthy list of defense witnesses to give insight into a 2022 traffic stop that ended with the that shooting of Black motorist Patrick Lyoya.

Moments after the prosecution rested its case, the defense requested to have the trial dismissed entirely. This request was based on testimony from two out-of-state witnesses for the prosecution, who spoke about former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr’s use of force during his deadly confrontation with Patrick Lyoya.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The defense is set to continue their case in the fourth day of the Christopher Schurr murder trial Thursday. Schurr, an ex-Grand Rapids police officer, is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal April 2022 shooting death of Patrick Lyoya. If convicted, Schurr faces up to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
