Aston Villa miss the chance to all but secure their place in the Champions League knockouts as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Monaco at Stade Louis II.

Passing into the mouth of danger once and being bitten early did not scare Villa away from their desire to play the same way. When passes were crisp and accurate, they broke through Monaco lines, with Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey all having shooting opportunities.

Moments later, the hosts scored the only goal of the game. A mistake from Tyrone Mings lead to a corner where Thilo Kehrer headed a powerful shot towards goal and despite Emi Martínez making a fine reaction save, Wilfried Singo headed home from close range.
