ABC13 has heard the Harris Health CEO detail hourslong waits for people at Ben Taub's emergency room, and patients attended to in the hallways because of a lack of space.

Harris County commissioners unanimously approved the acquisition of 8.9 acres of Hermann Park for the expansion of Ben Taub Hospital, one of only two adult Level I trauma facilities in the county.

The vote ends a months-long debate on the controversial plan that drew support from medical workers and the ire of the park's conservators.

The project will acquire some of Hermann Park to get more patient beds in the hospital.

The March 19 Commissioners Court meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the county's administration building located at 1001 Preston St., Houston.
