While Israel has declared daily pauses in its attacks on Gaza, humanitarians warn that the dropping of a few tonnes of aid will not abate the starvation crisis in Palestine

President Donald Trump says Hamas is reluctant to release the remaining hostages amid Israel's increase in humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza on Sunday.

JERUSALEM – Israel was poised Sunday to begin allowing more trucks of food aid into Gaza, and it resumed supplying power to a critical water treatment plant, marking a political turnaround nearly five months after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government started tightly controlling the flow of humanitarian aid to pressure Hamas.

“There was an air strike on Gaza City, and this is one of the areas that was designated as a safe area, and where the Israeli forces are going to halt their military operations,” Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reported from Deir el-Balah.

The Kingdom of Jordan will airdrop humanitarian aid into Gaza as Palestinians face widespread starvation and diplomatic talks over a ceasefire breakdown.

The prime minister is also expected to raise the issue with Donald Trump when he meets with the US president on Monday

On his trip to the United Kingdom over the weekend, President Trump announced the U.S. would be sending more aid to Gaza to help relieve the worsening famine. Israel also paused military operations in a number of places in Gaza to address the humanitarian crisis.

Malnutrition rates are reaching "alarming levels" in the Gaza Strip, the World Health Organization warned Sunday, saying the "deliberate blocking" of aid was entirely preventable and had cost many lives.

UNICEF spokesperson Joe English discusses the organization’s work in the Gaza Strip, saying the situation has “never been as bad as it is now.”

Senate Democrats told the secretary of state they have "grave concerns" about the U.S. role in financing GHF, the main group distributing aid in Gaza.
