Banks will be shutting down on January 20, Inauguration Day, because of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

The nation will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday as part of a National Day of Service to pay tribute to his legacy. The day is marked each year by a federal holiday when many businesses close.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

See below for details on whether or not banks, credit unions and U.S. stock markets will be open on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. As with most federal holidays, a majority of banks and other financial institutions will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and won't reopen until Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20 coincides with Trump’s inauguration. Government offices, postal services, and financial institutions will be closed, but retailers like Costco, Walmart, and Target will remain open.

In Harlem, New York, while signing copies of his first book, “Stride Toward Freedom,” Izola Ware Curry stabbed King with a letter opener between his heart and lung. He was taken to Harlem Hospital where his physician, Dr. Aubré D. Maynard, said, “If you had sneezed, your aorta would have been punctured and you would have drowned in your own blood.”
