LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A winter weather system will impact Kentucky and southern Indiana Monday night into Tuesday morning. According to the National Weather Service, mixed precipitation will be expected with this system. Around 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected in some areas.
A winter storm rolls in later today and tonight, kicking off Meteorological Winter with a sloppy mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and plain rain across Kentucky.
Louisville's snow forecast for Dec. 1 comes with some uncertainty, as forecasters are still trying to determine the track the winter weather takes.
Expect impacts to travel Monday night and Tuesday morning. The snow will likely move out of Kentuckiana by 7 a.m. Tuesday with temperatures hovering near 30 degrees across the region. Some snow accumulation is expected across most of Kentuckiana that will cause some slick travel for Tuesday morning.
Another Arctic blast is on the move toward the U.S., bringing the potential for bitter cold and heavy snow accumulations to Kentucky.
In addition, a weakening of the polar vortex — a swirling wall of cold air normally locked around Earth’s poles — could send bursts of Arctic air much further south in the U.S. This points to a cold start to December, the beginning of which will emerge over the Thanksgiving holiday.
With winter weather forecast for tonight, Lexington officials say the city is better prepared than ever with an expanded snow fleet and additional personnel following a $2.2 million investment.
