WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s capital challenged President Donald Trump’s takeover of its police department in court on Friday, hours after his administration stepped up its crackdown on policing by naming a federal official as the new emergency head of the department, with all the powers of a police chief.

Washington, DC, Police Chief Pamela Smith signed an executive order Thursday allowing DC police officers to share information about people not in their custody with federal immigration enforcement agencies such as ICE — as President Donald Trump continues his federal takeover of law enforcement in the nation’s capital and crackdown on illegal immigration.

The suit, filed in federal court, is the biggest pushback from city officials since President Donald Trump invoked a provision of the Home Rule Act — the 1970s law that allows for limited self-governance by D.C.’s government — which allows the president to request MPD’s services to address “special conditions of an emergency nature.”
