At least 13 dead after winter storm snarls travel, brings severe ice, heaviest snow in years
A massive winter storm impacted a vast swath of the United States this weekend, delivering widespread snow, ice, power outages and widespread travel disruptions from Texas to New England. The storm affected three dozen states and brought the most snow in five years to some cities,
Amid the falling sleet and snow, winds are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening, especially along the coast, bringing near white-out conditions. The strongest winds, up to 40 miles per hour, are expected in coastal Long Island and coastal Connecticut.
The massive storm dumped heavy snow and ice across a huge swath of the United States, leaving more than 800,000 homes without power.
An ice storm warning and winter weather advisories remained in place for northern Alabama on Saturday night as a massive winter storm continued to affect the area. Multiple road closures and icy roads were reported in parts of north Alabama earlier on Saturday as a round of freezing precipitation moved through.
More than 800 flights have been delayed or canceled Friday. Forecasters warn the storm could rival a hurricane in damage to power lines and trees.
Over 170,000 customers in Tennessee remain without power after a severe ice storm swept through the region over the weekend, causing widespread damage to trees and infrastructure, as well as downed power lines from ice accretion.
A severe ice storm led to a major traffic jam on I-55 in North Mississippi, leaving drivers stranded overnight as officials worked to clear the roads.
More than 15,000 blood and platelet donations went uncollected between January 23 and 28, the American Red Cross said.

A fine snow started the attack early last Sunday that switched to a wintry mix by about 9:15 a.m. Sunday. Through the day Sunday there was a mix of freezing rain and sleet that changed to rain, back to freezing rain and sleet before changing to all snow Sunday evening.
In addition, Cleburne and Calhoun counties in east-central Alabama will be under a winter storm watch from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon. Half an inch of snow and quarter-inch of ice will be possible. A mix of rain and freezing rain will be possible in Alabama over the weekend.
