Female lynxes enter estrus once a year, between February and April, and it lasts for one or two days. If a male lynx wants to mate with her, he will need to fend off other males.

I'm sure a true lynx fight would involve a lot more fur flying around. My guess for what happened here is that the big cats were arguing about the proper way to use "lynx" in the plural.
