Florian Wirtz scored his first Premier League goal as Liverpool held on to beat Wolves 2-1 at a nervous Anfield.

Liverpool squander the chance to steer clear in the race for fourth place as they were held to a goalless draw by Leeds United at Anfield in their opening Premier League game of 2026.

Hugo Ekitike missed an open goal as Liverpool and Leeds started 2026 with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's tenure at Anfeld. Jeremie Frimpong's left-footed strike in the first half was met by Ekitike, who bizarrely ended up heading the ball in the opposite direction when all he had to do was guide it into an open goal.

Some 90 seconds later, Wirtz - finding the back of the net for the first time in a competitive match since his arrival on Merseyside - prodded home past Jose Sa after collecting a through ball from the in-form Hugo Ekitike, sending Liverpool into the break with what looked to be a comfortable advantage.

Liverpool just hung on for a second straight Premier League win, and a third win in a row in all competitions, as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in North London on Saturday evening. Spurs finished the game with nine men, following red cards to Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said his side's dominance of possession counts for little without "special moments" of individual brilliance after a toothless display in drawing 0-0 at home to Leeds.
