Wilmington and its surrounding area are under a Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service beginning Tuesday night at 9 and lasting until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Snow is expected, according to the NWS, with total accumulations up to five inches near the coast with higher amounts possible in some areas.

Prior to the recent flurries, the National Weather Service last recorded snowfall in Wilmington on Jan. 29, 2022 — reporting a total half inch, according to the Wilmington N.C. Snowfall Database. Also, on Jan. 10, a system brought sleet to the area before turning into rain.

In its morning winter storm warning, the National Weather Service in Wilmington said the Wilmington area could pile on 3 to 4 inches of snowfall. However, the National Weather Service in Raleigh predicts 4 to 6 inches of snow in the Wilmington area as of 12:30 p.m.

On Tuesday at 12:16 p.m. a winter storm warning was issued by the NWS Wilmington NC valid from 9 p.m. until Wednesday 8 a.m.

Tuesday is a First Alert Weather Day as snow showers are possible across parts of the metro during the afternoon and evening hours.

A Winter Storm Watch in effect for parts of the First Coast from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service Jacksonville (NWS JAX) says mixed wintry precipitation is possible for the areas they've highlighted on the map.
