Some Arkansas families have sued to block a law mandating displays of the Ten Commandments in classrooms, arguing the religious displays create a coercive environment for students of other beliefs.

State lawmakers who sponsored Act 573, which would require Arkansas schools to post the 10 commandments, are now responding to a lawsuit aimed at blocking it.

Attorneys for the families said the law "violates longstanding U.S. Supreme Court precedent and the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment."
