A wildfire in the hills near the U.S.-Mexico border exploded early Friday morning over thousands of acres, triggering school closures and evacuation orders throughout the Otay Wilderness Area. Wind from the ocean pushed the Border 2 fire east as the day wore on and the evacuation area has expanded to include Dulzura and other rural spots east of Otay Mountain.

The fire that broke out near the U.S.-Mexico border was 10% contained as of Friday morning. It was one of several wildfires that started Thursday.

Cal Fire officials said Saturday the Border 2 fire in the Otay wilderness had burned 6,500 acres. From Los Angeles to the border, fire officials remain hopeful a Pacific storm late Saturday could bring enough rain and snow to slow wildfires.

A fast-moving wildfire erupted several miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border in the San Diego area, blackening thousands of open acres as ground and airborne crews worked Friday to quell the flames amid arid and blustery Santa Ana conditions.

The evacuation area for the Border 2 fire stretches east to state Route 94 and west to Lower Otay Lake, warnings issued for southwest side of lake.
