According to the city's Department of Investigation, a number of postings on X (formerly known as Twitter) were not only unprofessional in tone but also "encouraged an unproductive public discourse" that violated NYPD policies on acting with courtesy and civility.

A new report from an independent police monitor has found that two high-ranking NYPD officials violated department policy by sharing “unprofessional” posts on social media. The report from the NYPD inspector general faulted the NYPD’s Chief of Department John Chell and a deputy commissioner for a slew of “irresponsible” posts that attacked civil servants and journalists.

The Department of Investigation says social media posts by NYPD executives violated professionalism standards, encouraged “unproductive” discourse and failed to comply with citywide policies.
